Hurling In The Blood

Ger Gilroy

Kildare native Ger Gilroy is sports editor and voice of Newstalk Sport every weekend. Newstalk now broadcasts exclusively live GAA coverage and with his parents hailing from Antrim Ger definitely has hurling in his blood…

1. How long did your hurling career last?
Until I got to college really.

2. What age were you when it started/finished?
Started as a kid – both parents were hurlers and it finished when I got trampled by a proper athlete in Santry playing for TCD.

3. Did you win any hurling honours?
We won Under 16 and Minor league titles in the same year.

4. What was your greatest moment on the hurling pitch?
Either the Under 16 or minor titles. We beat Moorefield in the Under 16 league final with a team that played their best ever match in the final, but we beat Castledermot in the minor final after they’d hammered us in the league and they’re our nearest rivals.

5. Do you still pick up the stick every once in a while?
I’d like to.

6. Which hurlers do you most admire and why?
Donal Og, Sean Og, Joe Hennessy, Eoin Kelly, Lar Corbett, Jackie Tyrell, JJ and the rest.

7. Which club/county do you support?
Antrim although I grew up watching Kilkenny, Offaly and Galway a good bit.

8. What was the best match you ever attended?
Offaly-Limerick in 94 or Clare-Offaly in 95.

9. Would you prefer a 65 into the wind and rain at Croker or a 12 foot putt at Augusta?
Much better chance of me making the putt at this stage but honestly the chance to hurl in Croker would be top of the agenda.

10. An Oscar acceptance speech or a Liam McCarthy victory speech?
Probably going to go with the Oscar there.

11. If you could play with any county team which would it be and why?
Antrim because it’s where my parents hurled.

12. Have any of the skills you learned form hurling been of benefit to you in your current career?
Yeah you learn courage hurling. You can’t unlearn that.

13. Who is going to win the Liam McCarthy in 2011?
Tipp.

14. Who will win the U-21 Hurling Championship in your view?
Dublin.

15. Which radio presenter would you like on your hurling team?
Can I say Jamsie O’Connor?

16. What is your favourite GAA ground?
Geraldine Park, Athy.

17. Our website is called breakingthrough.ie.  What was your break through moment?
Well when we beat Castledermot in the minor league title it was reward for hard work so that counts.

18. Which hurling manager would you most liked to have played under?
John Allen.

19. What was your best attribute/skill on the hurling pitch?
I was a good man to catch a ball dropping in our own square.

20. What was the last hurling game you attended?
Working weekends makes it very tricky to get to enough but Kilkenny beating Tipp for the four in a row was my last one now.

21. You are one point down in the All-Ireland final and you have just been awarded a penalty in the last play of the game…goal or point?
Goal. John Leahy style.
